What makes a strong CV
These tips come from reading more than 1,000 CVs. Your CV has one job: to get you an interview. The reader must understand the size of your work without ever meeting you. At some companies, HR also decides your salary from interview feedback alone, so size matters.
1. Put achievements at the top1.
- Copying the job description. The manager already knows the role.
- "Responsible for security operations." No number, no result.
- Consolidated security operations vendors from seven to two, saving 300m JPY a year and bringing back visibility.
- Led MFA rollout across the company, reducing unauthorised access risk by 75%.

- Bug bounty award of 10,000 USD. CVE published.
2. Group your technical skills2.
- Adding every security keyword to pass a machine screen. In Japan there are about 1.5 applications per job ad, so a person reads your CV, not software.

Before the interview
This is the biggest missed chance in interview preparation. Twenty minutes is enough. Use the Q4 presentation, it is usually the most detailed. This is not the same as the financial report.
Look for:
- How the company makes money, by product, service or region. This tells you what you are being hired to protect.
- Technology investment, especially AI, cloud and data.
- Growth plans, mergers and digital transformation.
- Cyber and operational risk, and the outlook for the year.
News articles are not enough
- Good for recent events: new executives, incidents, fines, mergers.
- Weak for strategy. News looks backwards and misses long term plans and technology investment.
Research the interviewers
- People ask questions from their own strengths. A department manager asks fewer technical questions. An engineer with no management duties will ask about the tech stack they know well.
- Senior executives often have talks or interviews online. Watch one. Matching their tone and pace builds trust quickly.
- Do you know anyone inside the company who can explain the team?
Understand what kind of role it isどのような役割かを理解する
Your goal is to understand the team's main problem and show that you are the solution. For a CISO or head of security role, ask which of these three it is, then choose examples that match.
- Start up. Building a team or function from zero. Needs vision, process and hiring.
- Turnaround. The team is in trouble. Needs fast assessment and quick action to stabilise it.
- Business as usual. Keep daily operations stable, improve processes step by step, meet agreed standards.

Tell me about a complex project you are proud of.
Example: I led a project to share our threat detection analysis with the fraud team. The problem was that data sources were not standardised, so correlation was poor. I worked with IT to clean the data and set new output requirements. We now prevent 500m JPY of fraud a year.
How do you drive security awareness?

Interviewing with a consumer tech company
Companies like Mercari and Paidy expect you to know their product. Not using the app before the interview is the fastest way to look uninterested.
Use the app firstまずアプリを使う
- Sign up and complete one real action. Buy or sell an item. Make one payment. A finished transaction gives you something specific to talk about.
- Watch the security touch points as a user: sign up, login, MFA options, identity check, payment, password reset, permissions the app asks for.
- Have one honest observation ready, said with respect. "I noticed the login flow allows X. In my last role we handled that by Y." This shows interest, not criticism.
- Read their engineering blog and any public security or trust page. Many Japanese tech companies publish more than people expect.
- Check whether they run a bug bounty or vulnerability disclosure programme. It tells you how mature the security team is, and it is a good question to ask.
Important: use the app as a normal user only. Do not scan, test or probe a company's production service before you work there, even to impress them. Every hiring manager I know treats this as a serious red flag, and it can end the process immediately.
Be ready to talk about side projects
Product companies hire for curiosity. Side work is often the clearest evidence of it.
- GitHub, open source contributions, CTF results, a home lab, published CVEs, bug bounty findings, conference talks, a blog, a study group you run.
- For each one, be able to say what problem you were solving, what you chose to build, and what you learned. The reasoning matters more than the tool.
- Tidy your public profiles before you apply. Assume the interviewer will open your GitHub.
- If you have no side projects, say so plainly and talk instead about what you read, follow or test at work. Do not invent one.
Show that security can move at product speed
- These companies release often. They want a security person who enables a release, not one who blocks it. Bring an example of how you reduced risk without slowing a team down.
- Expect questions about the balance between user experience and security. Fraud, account takeover, identity checks and payments are where that tension is real for them.
Good questions you can ask
What do you need to deliver in the next one to three years?
Follow up with: what is missing in the team to deliver that now?
How do you give feedback and evaluate performance?

You cannot learn a manager's style from the job description.

Ask this at the end. Their concern comes out, and you can answer it with a story about a similar situation you handled.
Mistakes to avoid
- Saying "we did this" instead of "I did this". Foreign interviewers want to know your own part.
- Answering without a specific example. Use CAR: Context, Action, Result.
- In a design interview, giving only the answer without your thought process.
- Negative comments about a previous employer.
- Blaming others instead of taking responsibility.
- A long self introduction.
If you are moving to Japan from overseas
Why Japan?
"Japan is technologically advanced" is a weak answer. That is true for consumer products, but many companies still run on fax machines and spreadsheets. Interviewers want a real connection: a Japanese partner, studying the language, a long interest in the culture. Never having visited Japan is a concern for most interviewers.
How will you adjust to the culture here?
Japanese business culture avoids direct conflict and builds agreement slowly. A nod does not always mean yes. Recommended reading: The Culture Map by Erin Meyer. If this is your first role in Japan, ask the company for a buddy to help you settle in.
Why did you leave your past roles?
Average tenure in Japan is 12.4 years, so job changes get more questions here. Keep your answers consistent across interviewers and keep them positive: career development, more leadership responsibility, deeper specialisation, relocation.
Do not disclose your current salary or expectations
Once you name a number, you cannot negotiate above it. I handle this conversation for you.
"My agent holds the full detail of my salary and benefits, and I would rather not give you a figure that turns out to be wrong."
Or give a wide band, for example 15 to 17 million JPY, which preserves room to move.
SPI test (Synthetic Personality Inventory)SPI(総合適性検査)
Designed for graduate hiring, but some Japanese companies still run it on all hires late in the process. It covers language, maths and personality.

A counter offer usually fixes the salary and none of the reasons you started looking. In our experience the large majority of people who accept one are back in the market within six months, having lost the offer they had and some credibility internally.
How we work together
I can deliver the above because I work with a maximum of ten candidates at a time. Two things make the process work:

- Let me represent you. If you see a role elsewhere, through another agent or directly, come to me first. Companies typically hold a 12 month ownership period on any application, so once your CV is in through another route I cannot help you there. You may also never reach interview, because most agents do not have the hiring manager relationship to follow up on your behalf.

We offer a 30,000 JPY Amazon gift voucher for a successful new client or candidate referral, payable once the candidate passes three months in the role.
